Research and Development

Our research interests are focused on the professionalization of the humanitarian sector and on the development of innovative training tools for disaster education.

Over the past half-century, naturally occurring and man-made disasters worldwide have seen a sharp upward trend with most internal crises requiring external support. However, lessons learned from recent disasters suggest that humanitarian medical responders are not sufficiently competent in disaster response.

The discipline that best defines humanitarian professionals requires a combination of specific skill competencies related to their profession combined with core humanitarian competencies obtained through specialized training, education, and simulation experiences. In the last few years, we have been exploring the competencies specific to humanitarian training that are practice and application-oriented, teachable and measurable.

Moreover, collaborating with public and private organizations, we have been developing different simulators for education in disaster preparedness.

The ISEE simulator is designed to create tactical and strategic emergency plans that can be used in a realistic environment.
The DSS is a web-based, semi quantitative drill evaluation system, which exaggerates a real-life incident and allows the collection, aggregation and analysis of data from dynamic and distributed environment of disaster exercises.

In 2012, the DSS was used to test the disaster plan of the football stadium ‘Silvio Piola’ (Emergency Medical Services of the city of Novara), and the disaster plan of F1 Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit  (Abu Dhabi’s health authority) and in 2014 to assess a response during mass casualty incident in a refugee camp.

An innovative Google Glass application for mass casualty triage has been developed to improve the accuracy of triage during drills and real disaster response.
